HUMANITARIAN VISA

JULIAN  ASSANGE

RECENT NEWS !

British court refuses to extradite Julian Assange
After the refusal, on January 4, 2021, of a British court to extradite Julian Assange for medical reasons, would it not be time to grant him a humanitarian visa so that he could come and recover his health at the Geneva University Hospitals, as requested by the Resolution voted on February 27, 2020 by the Parliament of the Canton of Geneva?

CAUSE

A HUMANITARIAN VISA: WHY?

After 9 years of preliminary investigations for « sexual misconduct », the Swedish authorities have definitely closed all investigations against Julian Assange, and revoked the arrest warrant they had issued.

Nevertheless Julian Assange remains detained in Bellmarsh, a high security prison in the United Kingdom, pending an extradition request from the United States. Julian Assange is in solitary confinement, 23 hours a day, in this prison which was built to detain the UK’s most dangerous criminals.

The experts from the United Nations have clearly stated that Julian Assange is being tortured and his life is at risk. He urgently requires medical care.

The first part of the extradition hearings from the UK to the USA ended on 27 February 2020. Julian Assange may face death penalty if extradited to the Unites States. The second part of the extradition process is due to take place in May 2020. However, he is currently not facing any charges and he could be released on bail in the meantime.

Embracing the humanitarian tradition of Geneva, which is the European home base of the United Nations and the international capital of human rights, the Geneva parliament has voted by a very large majority to urgently grant Julian Assange a humanitarian visa.

Julian Assange will sign and file a formal humanitarian visa request at the Swiss embassy in London. The Federal Council will then formally decide while taking into account the position of the State of Geneva.

A humanitarian visa is not an asylum, but a temporary right to reside in Geneva. It will allow Julian Assange to recover his health and decide freely where we would like to live his life.

Nils Melzer

United Nations (UN) special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment

« In 20 years of work with victims of war, violence and political persecution I have never seen a group of democratic States ganging up to deliberately isolate, demonise and abuse a single individual for such a long time and with so little regard for human dignity and the rule of law. The collective persecution of Julian Assange must end here and now ».

Key documents of Nils Melzer confirming that Julian Assange suffered systematic and repeated torture over a long period of time.

Press releases of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)

On Thursday, 27 February 2020, the Geneva Parliament adopted an emergency resolution by a large majority and requested that the Confederation grant a humanitarian visa to Julian Assange

The humanitarian visa will allow Julian Assange to access urgent medical care.

“The situation of Mr Assange, both from a humanitarian and a health point of view, should be of direct concern to all of us who believe in democracy. The Cantonal Government will support this resolution with the federal authorities. It is not about interference, it is about good offices."
Mauro Poggia,
Minister of security, employment and health

"Julian Assange has been locked in for 10 years. A humanitarian visa will allow him to undergo medical treatment in the Geneva Cantonal Hospital which specialises in post traumatic stress disorder”
Jean Rossiaud, MP at the Geneva Parliament
The Green Party
